We’re geeks who use Twitter, right?  And for those of us who use Twitter to its actual potential, we take advantage of Twitter lists.

While I realize that some people organize their own lists in their own way because they have their own method to their madness, then there are those common threads that most of us probably can agree on.

Just how many of us have Twitter lists that overlap?

Did you know that Twitter caps the number of lists that you can have at 20? BUT, if you follow someone else’s list, it’d only count as one!  Imagine the reduction in overhead thanks to consolidation.

For the past 2 years, I have been trying to get the South Florida technology community on the same page, and I think that this would be a great way to start.

Let’s take a look at my lists for example:

Now, there is no way that I’m going to say that this list is 100% complete by any stretch of the imagination.

With the number of people we network with, combined with how frequently new users join Twitter, it’s almost impossible for all of us to keep track of everyone.

…And I’ll be the first to admit that it could probably use some trimming and moving around.

But as the South Florida SOCIAL Geeks, don’t we owe it to ourselves to at least make an attempt to share our knowledge with others?

As most of you may remember, about 4 weeks ago, Outback Steakhouse held a promotion where they were giving away free Steak dinners.  However, unlike almost every promotion on the web today, they chose to mail the dinner vouchers through the USPS as opposed to making them available for download to be printed out.

Since neither my father, nor I, have received ours, I, of course, went to their Facebook FAN page to see what recourse is available.  Like any good promotion, the page was filled with both positive and negative responses.  Those who got their vouchers thanked Outback for their dinner and expressed their enthusiasm.  Those that did not get their vouchers or got their mailings only to find the the coupon missing were told to
contact our team  and we will take care of you.
Out of all the responses I saw from the last 72 hours, I was grateful to see at least one customer was willing to come back to tell the rest of us how it turned out for them
I just want to say thank you! I got my free steak dinner today.. After all the confusion and issues during the giveaway— it was great to know that you guys handled it! Can’t wait to enjoy it!!!
Personally, while I do want my free steak dinner, as a social geek, I would also like to know why Outback chose to use such an antiquated method of reward distribution.

attempted something extremely similar about a month ago when they gave out free breakfast vouchers.  Not only was it successful because participants could immediately print out their coupons, but if someone lost theirs, the voucher was easy to reprint without any interaction with the Chick-Fil-A team.  This probably saved them time and money on mailings, stamps, and issue resolutions.
I hope Outback learns from their mistakes with this promotion and fixes them for the next one.

{SIDENOTE: I will keep this post updated if I hear back from Outback}

  • Did you participate in the promotion?
  • Have you gotten yours yet?
  • If you didn’t get it, how has Outback responded, or reached out to you?

{UPDATE 9/29/2011} Since posting this entry and reaching out to Outback through Twitter, I have received a response from Outback Steakhouse’s marketing team.  This response not only included a direct tweet, but also an offer to call and speak with me directly.  Already, that earned them some points back in my book.

It would appear as though they chose to go with the snail mail to make the voucher seem more special, and to insure that it was truly redeemed by one per person without being printed out multiple times.  This makes sense, and something that I should have thought of.  For that, I withdraw my complaint and respect their decision to go through this process instead.

They also explained that the vouchers were being sent out in at least 2 different batches and that appeared as though both mine, and my father’s, were in that second batch.  However, to address my concerns, in addition to those vouchers, they offered to FedEx me and dad 2 each an additional voucher.

I thank @Outback for their professionalism.  They uniquely utilized Social Media through their marketing strategy as well as how they responded to various complaints.  I also look forward to continuing this newly developed relationship.

Miami promotional partners WSVN TV – Deco Drive, WJAN TV 4,, and will disclose clues during the week of Monday, June 6 – Friday, June 13 to help fans identify the “Green Lantern” symbol’s secret location. Some who are photographed at the event will have their picture posted on the above mentioned Facebook page :

“Green Lantern” opens in theaters nationwide in 3D and 2D on Friday, June 17, 2011. The film has been rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action.

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, an elite, powerful force has existed for centuries.  Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. Warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him the ability to create anything his mind can imagine.  But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Bringing the enduringly popular superhero to the big screen for the first time, “Green Lantern” stars Ryan Reynolds in the title role, under the direction of Martin Campbell.  Campbell directed the film from a screenplay by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim and Michael Goldenberg, story by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim, based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics.  The film also stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett and Tim Robbins.  “Green Lantern” was produced by Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti.  Herbert W. Gains and Andrew Haas served as executive producers, with Lucienne Papon and Geoff Johns co-producing.

You know the words, but are you ready to take the oath?

In Brightest Day
In Blackest Night
No Evil Shall Escape My Sight
Let Those Who Worship Evil’s Might
Beware My Power
Green Lantern’s Light

Are you ready to embrace what it means to be a member of the Corp?

Well, remember the scene in the trailer where the entire CORP chants “WE ARE THE CORP” and the sky fills with the color GREEN?  That’s what it’s going to be like Monday night June 13th when the Green Lantern symbol will shine brightly on a local landmark somewhere in the tri-county South Florida radius.

BUT, just like the planet OA is hidden from the rest of the galaxy, don’t think we’re going to make it easy for you to find.

All this week, I’ll be giving out clues to our own local OA on our FAN PAGE, Facebook group, Twitter Account, and at various events throughout South Florida.

If you have the WILLPOWER to put the pieces together, and are among the first to find us at 9:00 PM on Monday night, June 13th, then you’ll be recruited to join the largest GL Party you’ve ever seen.

As an honorary member of the CORP, you’ll be eligable to win a ton of free stuff that night including:

  • limited edition T-shirts
  • “Green Lantern: Emerald Knights” Blu-ray combo packs
  • light-up “Green Lantern” rings

AND, of course, tickets to our exclusive #geekviewpreview10: Green Lantern on Wednesday night, June 15th, at 7:30pm.

For my regulars out there, this is the ONLY way you’re going to be able to get #geekviewpreview10 tickets, so I expect to see you there.

If you were on the #ChevyGeekHunt, then I expect you to be wearing your rings.

Thanks to Warner Bros for are embracing our local geek community with open arms and seriously delivering on the goods.

Finally, be sure to check back with us on Monday during the day to be given the final clue as well as instructions to prove that you’re one of us, a fellow geek.

CLUE #1: In what city does the film in the clip below take place?

CLUE #2:  To find me on Monday, June 13th, at 9pm to get your #geekview10 passes to see Green Lantern, you’ll have to go to this part of the city in CLUE #1:

CLUE #3: I think this clue kind of speaks for itself:

CLUE #4: If you’re thinking it’s “older one”, think again. This location is celebrating it’s 5th anniversary.

Think you’ve figured it out by now, please leave a comment below. Comments will be screened. I will contact you if you are right or wrong. If you are correct, you will receive additional information about Monday night.Still need help figuring it out? I’ll be at the following events over the next 3 days. Find me and scan my QR code to get an extra exclusive clue.

UPDATE: Since the Book of OA is the law, the Guardians have convened and granted us permission to reveal the location of their newest recruiting center here in South Florida:

The Adrienne Arsht Center
Miami, FL

New recruits should leave their spaceships in Parking Lot C on 13th St. between Biscayne and 2nd Ave at exactly 9:00 p.m. sharp.

First of all, I would like to issue a huge thank you to everyone who can out for our first every #comicbookcrawl.  As you can see from the photos below, and the many tweets, it was a fantastic success.

Before we set out on the road, we all gather outside of Tate’s to meet each other and I had special surprises for them.  On the numerous crawls that I have been on in the past, perhaps the greatest complaint that all participants had was that they cell phone batteries kept dying.  Well, when I was at SxSW last month, I made a fantastic connection with the Social Media team from @RadioShack who were more then willing to help us out.  Together, we made sure that everyone got their own Enercell cellphone battery backup pack.

@amandastewart @mklopez @mkhall & @tigrrblood show off their new battery backups courtesy of @radioshack

If you have never used a battery backup pack before, than this is the one to get, and I’m not just praising them because they were a sponsor, but from personal experience.  Without this backup, my phone would’ve died multiple times throughout SxSW.  As you can imagine, everyone was both extremely surprised, and very grateful that they got one.

thanks @radioshack for the mobile chargers #comicbookcrawl

Thank you to @radioshack for the free mobile power pack supporting the #comicbookcrawl! Will come in handy!

Also, thanks to @radioshack for the charger! #FCBD

Thanks to @radioshack I can recharge my phone’s battery. I wish we had a # comicbookcrawl sponsor to recharge -my- batteries…

Even my hometown of @coralsprings_pk got in on the @RadioShack praise

#comicbookcrawl @radioshack may just be a shack, but it has great stuff not found in other shacks #Thanks 4 participating! @sflsocialgeeks

This particular pack works with most major cell phones, comes with iPhone, micro-USB, and mini-USB adapters, and when fully charged, can give you up to 8 hours of extra battery life.

But, on top of that, @RadioShack also donated $25 gift cards prizes for those with the best tweets:

The first winner had to be @ILovePochacco with her tweet:

“Now I can’t use the excuse, “but my battery was dead” when my MIL tries calling.#comicbookcrawl Thx @radioshack!”

[NOTE: MIL = Mother-in-law]

The second winner was @alli_actually with the most geekiest tweet:

“Charged faster than Sonic racing to defeat Robotnik. Thanks @radioshack! #FCBD”

The third winner, @mkhall, was actually thanked @RadioShack themselves:

Thank you to @radioshack for the free mobile power pack supporting the #comicbookcrawl! [Resent to correct typos]

You are welcome! Hope you guys are having a nice day -ing

Finally, the last winner @amandastewart gave perhaps the best tweet to thank our first stop, most gracious hosts, and fantastic sponsor, Tate’s

The goodies & swag from @tatescomics is all sorts of awesome. This is why I go here ALL the time. thanks for the hospitality #comicbookcrawl

Some of you might be familiar with Free Comic Book Day (FCBD). If not, this is the short version:

Every year, on first Saturday of May, comic book distributors give local comic stores throughout the country specially printed free versions of their comics to give away.  The goal is to help encourage the reading of comics, celebrate the industry, and for some, use it as a launching pad for either new comic series or a larger yearly event.

Each store usually allows one to five free comics per person and there are about 30 or so free titles total. Let’s see if we can get them all! 🙂

For more information about the annual tradition, please feel free to check out

Saturday, May 7th (all times are approximate & subject to change)

10:30 AM:

Meet at Tate’s

4566 N University Drive

Lauderhill, FL 33351

10:30 AM – 11:00 AM:
We will introduce each other, take pictures, and set up our carpooling arrangements.

11:00 AM SHARP
Enter Tate’s.

From this point forward, the plan is to spend about 45 mins on each store. Times are VERY approximate, and depending on weather and traffic we might do adjustments on the fly

12:00 PM
Head just a few blocks North of Tate’s to Crossroad Comics

4952 North University Drive
Lauderhill, FL 33351

They are advertising a sidewalk sale that day, so be prepared.

1:30 PM

We’ll head even further north to Docking Bay 94 in Pompano.

7710 NW 56th Way # 100
Pompano Beach, FL 33073

Docking Bay may appear small, but they are a fantastic venue that has been incredibly supportive of the South Florida Social Geek community. They are advertising music performances, an artist alley where you can get sketches, and many other activities.

Like the South Florida Crawls before us:

  • ChevyPizzaCrawl

  • ChevyCupcakeCrawl

  • ChevyWingCrawl

  • ChevyGeekHunt

We encourage participants to Tweet about their experience, send out TwitPics, and check-in through Foursquare.

Since Docking Bay will be

be having Papa John’s Pizza and Sodas, we’ll be having lunch there at the Crawl will officially be over.

For the best of the best, we’ll have prizes from our sponsor, RadioShack.  Please be sure to follow them on Twitter: @RadioShack.

Things to remember:

  • Please keep in mind that the entire point of FCBD is to sponsor and promote these stores, and this industry.  In this spirit, we kindly as that you buy at least one item from each store, regardless of what it is

  • Make sure you have a full take of gas

  • Have one, if not several, bottles of water handy

  • If you have a car chargers for your cell phones, bring them.  Twitpics and Tweets will use up your battery quickly
  • The Twitter hashtag is #comicbookcrawl

#geekview9 Thor, a set on Flickr.

Thanks to everyone that came out for #geekview9 to see Thor. I know it was a long drive and was thrilled that @ryantxr was able to make it. Plus, since it was in his neck of the woods, we were joined by @AGuyOnClematis who had never been to one of our #geekviewpreview before.

As you can see, it was quite a large turnout and the line just kept getting longer and longer as time went on. Regretfully, due to circumstances beyond our control, the film did not start until 11am, but it was definitely worth the wait. This was, without a doubt, a pure Marvel Comic Book film. This reminded me of just how well Sony did with the first Spider-Man. It’s such a pleasure when you see the movies done right.

@aguyonclematis: I’m on my way… looking forward to #geekview9 THOR is going to ROCK

@sflsocialgeeks: Even in this South Florida heat, at 9am, people are waiting in line outside for #geekview9.

@ryantxr: line is getting long at thor movie #geekview

@aguyonclematis: The line for Thor screening at #geekview9

RT @aguyonclematis: RT @sflsocialgeeks: Can you believe this is the first IRL meeting of @aGuyonClematis & @ryantxr ? #geekview9

@aguyonclematis: The crowd is getting rowdy ouside the Thor screening… if the doors don’t open soon there will be a riot of god-like proportions #geekview9

@aguyonclematis: We’re in!!! #geekview9 preview of Thor is starting

@aguyonclematis: photo: VIP seating at #geekview9 – Thor is about to get started

@awormus: Waiting for #thor 3d to start #geekview

@ryantxr: thor kicks ass #geekview

@thedonz: @aGuyonClematis Nice bro!! Let me know how it is!!

@aguyonclematis: @thedonz Thor was good! I look forward to watching NOT in 3d, it was a bit distracting. But good movie all together #geekview9

It’s summer time and you know what that means

And what better way to start this season off right than

Unfortunately, I’ve got some good news, and I’ve got some bad news.

The good news is that this preview is actually going to be one that several of you will not only be able to attend, but one that is early enough that you can even bring your kids to.

Saturday, April 30th, 10am

Yes, you read the right.  An early morning show.

Now, the really bad news, especially for those of you in Dade county

(because you knew something this good would come with a catch).

This showing is going to be at:

Regal Royal Palm Beach theater.
1003 State Road 7
Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411
(561) 795-0288

[cetsEmbedGmap src=,+FL&aq=1&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=48.688845,101.337891&ie=UTF8&hq=Regal&hnear=Royal+Palm+Beach,+Palm+Beach,+Florida&ll=26.705133,-80.203457&spn=0.104432,0.197926&z=13&iwloc=A width=640 height=550 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 frameborder=0 scrolling=no]

Please remember that, as with all #geekviewpreview events, seating is only available on a first come, first serve basis so we recommend arriving early- usually at least an hour in advance.   I will do what I can to save seats, but it’s going to be tough.

Yea, I know that’s going to be early.  Those of you, like myself, coming from Broward, are looking, at least, at an hour drive.  That means leaving around 8am at the latest; more-so for those of you in Dade.

However, since we are in the Earth Day window, and it’s Green Month, there has been some serious discussion about carpooling if there are enough people interested.

Those who have been to any of my #geekviewpreview events before can tell you that we have a fantastic time and you can just look at our previous events to see for yourself.  Don’t you want to be the first of your friends to say that “I just saw THOR !”

“How can *I* can get a pass?”

  1. Go to the comment section below.

  2. Log-in with either FACEBOOK, TWITTER, YAHOO, or OPENID.

    • If you don’t have one, it should ask you to enter your e-mail address to post anonymously

  3. Leave a comment saying:

    • How you heard about this give-away

    • Why you think you should go

    • Confirm you can make it to theater no later than 9am.

PLEASE REMEMBER that each pass is good for up-to 2 people.
